As many of you know, I leave for New York City on Monday for a month long internship with Mission to the World, and I want to take some time to share with you about my journey to this point!
For the past couple of years, I have known that I wanted to do some type of missions internship after I graduated from high school so this past fall I got on MTW’s website to see the opportunities they provided. I sent in an interest form expecting it to take weeks before someone responded. Surprisingly, the next day I received an email asking when someone could call me regarding the internship opportunities. I talked to a MTW staff member a few days later. She told me about a few opportunities, but the one that stood out to me was the Cross-Cultural Training Ministry (CCMI) in New York. For those of you who don’t know much about this internship, MTW holds their annual pre-field cross-cultural training in July for missionaries who are about to go onto the mission field. As an intern, I will assist with childcare and teaching these children about aspects of cross-cultural ministry. I will also participate in community outreach with missionaries in one of the ethnic churches. I will be able to learn aspects of ministry in a different culture and grow through a four-week discipleship program to study God’s Word.
There were several reasons that this internship interested me. Since this internship is only one month long, I have had some summer weeks to enjoy with my family before leaving for college in the fall. Also, I will be able to participate in hands on ministry while also learning and growing in my walk with Christ through the discipleship program. And yes, it didn’t hurt that it is in New York City. : ) However, the biggest reason is that I get to minister to those who have decided to dedicate their lives to sharing the gospel of Jesus. Last summer when I was in Haiti, I met an amazing family who run the Hands and Feet Project. As I interacted with them, I realized how important it is that we come alongside the people on the mission field and faithfully encourage them. I am thrilled that I may be a small instrument the Lord uses to pour into those around me.
While you may not have the opportunity as I do to physically go and encourage missionary families, why not join me in ministry by praying for a missionary family of your choice? Pray for the specific work that God has called them to and that they would feel strengthened and encouraged. Why not go one step further and send them an email or letter letting them know you are praying for them?
